Most parents have work schedules that are far too hectic to imagine. And when they come home the chaos does not get any better. But the big gorilla in the world of GPS stands almost alone. This big hairy primate is Garmin GPS.

We mentioned before about the Garmin Forerunner series of GPS watches that are a boon to runners everywhere. Another way that Garmin helps you is with its Nuvi line of car GPS devices. In each price point for consumers, from budget device to very expensive and all the bells and whistles devices, Garmin has the competition pretty much beaten.

Garmin has multicolored GPS screens that can also function with touch control. Additionally, there are some Garmin GPS units that can be taken out of the car and used as handheld GPS units. These can also be used to store languages and help you translate the local language if you happen to be travelling in one of approximately 9 countries that the GPS unit supports the language.

Garmin, Magellan or Tom Tom. Each manufacturer has its fans and critics so each holds a different share of the market. With the miniaturization that has taken over GPS technology, a GPS device can be fitted into something as small and inconspicuous as a wrist watch.

Cell phone location works by the same method any other GPS device works to get their location. It pings the satellite in orbit and vice versa and then establishes its position on the Earth’s surface. One other thing that the article may not mention is that with GPS capability, you may be able to track your netbook if it ever gets lost or stolen.

Once the 1990’s rolled around, the commercial applications became obvious. So the United States government released some of the bandwidth for communications companies. Overnight, the automobile GPS companies and cell phone GPS companies sprang up to fill the gap.

And as with most technologies, the use of GPS has spread like wildfire across the globe and has inserted itself deep within our culture. Within 10 years, GPS went from a little known military application to a household word.

Because of its ease of use and its applicability to a wide range of environments and uses, you can now see people with GPS in their cars, in their earpieces, on their cell phones, in their watches or even inside any articles of clothing they may have.
